mining company difference
Mining is at the heart of Papua New Guinea’s economic and social landscape, and is critical to the country’s development and future prosperity.
APMC adopts an innovative approach relying on spatial analysis and in-depth planning to identify the socio-economic development opportunities which have the most potential of success within each specific PNG community. Once identified, APMC harness its relationships with its stakeholders to make socio-economic opportunities a reality.
This approach is designed to lay the foundations for sustainable socio-economic development over the long-term, well-past the cessation of mining operations, with the end goal being – lifting the island country out of third world/developing world status.

Critical foundations of the Sustainable Mining Plan
APMC Critical Foundations form the common and minimum requirements for each of the Asia Pacific mining operations and the business as a whole. The Critical Foundations are essential to APMC’s long-term credibility and the success of both its mining strategy and social license to operate.
Collaborative Regional Development
Collaborative Regional Development is at the core of these plans and hinges on bringing long-term, sustainable development and socio-economic opportunities to the regions in which the minerals and gold mining company operates.
Global Stretch Goals
Each of the three Global Sustainability Pillars comprises three goals respectively – economic viability, environmental protection and social equity. These goals are deliberately ambitious as they are designed to challenge APMC to lead and innovate.
The APMC alluvial mining company is striving towards achieving these goals between now and 2030, and over the course of 2022, will spend $8 million on community investment to start laying the groundwork to…
- Create five jobs off-site for every mining job created on-site in the Asia Pacific communities where the mining company operates.
- Help targeted schools in host communities perform along the top 20% of state schools.
Environmental Compliance
Striving for the highest standards
APMC strives for the highest standards of environmental compliance and governance to drive transparency and improve accountability with stakeholders. Environmental management practices which comply with environmental legal and regulatory requirements are vitally important to APMC’s sustainability goals.
The Australian mining company acknowledges its auditing obligations under Regulation 34 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations 2014, requiring APMC to make environmental authorisation and environmental management program report audits available on the website.
“Asia Pacific Mining and Civil Papua New Guinea is committed to mining Gold and Silver in a responsible manner. We strive to achieve the highest standards of governance and performance and to enhance transparency and accountability to our stakeholders. This is the first year we have publicly disclosed NEMA Regulation 34 Environmental Audit Reports. We continue to strive for improvement in our performance and we commit to addressing the findings in these reports in our journey to responsible mining.”

Five-Year Plans
Flexible and responsive five year plans
All APMC mining sites will develop their own bespoke, five-year plans. These plans will be flexible and responsive to each mining operation’s local context, priorities and opportunities, while remaining aligned to the three Global Sustainability Pillars and Global Stretch Goals.

NATIONAL REGULATED FRAMEWORK
Creation of a National Regulated Framework
To advance democracy within PNG, APMC alluvial mining company will promote awareness by creating a national regulated framework which includes:
- A connected national integrity plan to tackle corruption at all levels within the island nation.
- A federal integrity commission which acts as an anti-corruption watch dog to prevent detect and stop corruption.
- Promotion of transparent, accountable, ethical and trustworthy decision making to prevent unfair influences over policies and funding decisions.
- Application of fair honest democratic principles to ensure fair elections and sanctions to penalise unscrupulous and corrupt election/political behaviour.
- Encouragement of whistleblowing and journalism in the public interest, and protection of the whistle blowers and journalists.
Creation of a National Transparency Framework
To encourage democracy to take root, create a trusted business environment, and plant the seeds to grow a healthy and prosperous society, the alluvial mining company will draw up a National Transparency Framework to mitigate organized crime and corruption – the enemies of free and fair societies and the rule of law.
This framework will encompass:
Infrastructure Integrity – If infrastructure projects are designed and built without effective anti-corruption controls and assurance then buildings and bridges collapse, roadways are built to nowhere, environments are damaged, communities are oft left divided and displaced, and in worst case scenarios, lives are lost.
Mining Integrity – APMC will focus on promoting and investing in key public sector reforms to strengthen PNG’s system of governance. APMC will work with the PNG mining industry, NGOs, government representatives and societal organisations to minimise corruption and bribery risks via instigating due diligence protocols, and adopting anti money laundering best practices and a zero-tolerance approach to bribery.
The formulation of this National Transparency Framework considers all of PNG’s integrity institutions to lay out the essential reforms needed to drive greater transparency, accountability and integrity.
"Papua New Guinea has the opportunity to demonstrate its leadership, both in terms of the way it structures the country for business, but more importantly, the way it structures the country for growth and to look after every citizen. At APMC, we know that one of the best investments we can make in Papua New Guinea is to give children access to quality international education standards and systems. Through education we can help eliminate the triple challenges that the National Development Plan 2030 aims to address - poverty, inequality and unemployment.”

Employee Housing Initiatives
Mining charter requirements
All APMC business units in Papua New Guinea are working towards achieving Mining Charter requirements by the end of 2023, and some ambitious collaborative housing development projects are already in progress to alleviate the shortage of much-needed available housing for employees.
APMC’s focus is on making it possible for eligible employees to buy their own homes in suitable areas near its mining operations. As such, APMC housing initiatives also take into consideration the financial and personal circumstances of each employee.
APMC mining company believes that offering quality accommodation and attractive housing options is a key factor in attracting and retaining skilled employees.
Paving the Way for Ethical & Diverse Australian Mining Companies
APMC strives to build a culture that doesn’t tolerate any form of discrimination, encourages women into the mining industry, and reflects and harnesses a rich diversity of ideas and perspectives.
The Australian mining company recognises the moral value and return on investment value of fostering an environment of diversity, respect and equal opportunity for all staff regardless of gender. To this aim, APMC is transforming its workforce at all levels to reflect the demographics of the Asia Pacific region, as well as ensuring skills developed by employees are used optimally within the company.
Enhancing diversity in its workforce, particularly in company management ranks, has been a high priority for APMC over the years, and hinges upon changing workplace attitudes and behaviour.
Women in PNG MininG
Attractive work environments for men and women
The recruitment and retention of skilled, highly-sought-after Historically Disadvantaged Papua New Guineans (HDSA's), particularly women, is an ongoing challenge for the island nation. The widespread lack of skills in PNG has resulted in stiff competition for suitable mining company employees.
APMC continues to identify and develop cost-effective initiatives aimed at creating an increasingly attractive work environment for men and women, complemented by real development opportunities.
